White Fillings FAQ's
Serving Sonora, near Stockton & Modesto
What caused my cavity?
Cavities are caused when bacteria builds up on the surface of the tooth. Sugary foods can make teeth extra-vulnerable to decay, especially if that sugar is allowed to sit on enamel for a period of time. Bacteria is just waiting to attach itself to teeth and gums and harm the enamel and tissue through a process called demineralization.
Men, women and children who are lax with their home dental care routine or who skip dental visits will have a greater chance of developing cavities. Brushing and flossing is necessary to rid your mouth of tiny pieces of food that hide and form acid-causing bacteria. Schedule your check-up now!
Why does Dr. Berger only do white fillings?
First of all, metal fillings, while effective in preventing decay, can actually weaken the structure of a tooth. The metal fillings do not bond tightly to enamel, and hot or cold temperatures can cause metal to expand and contract. While there is no scientific evidence to prove that mercury-containing metal fillings are harmful, Dr. Berger prefers to be cautious. Dr. Berger uses composite and porcelain fillings to give patients a natural result that won't weaken teeth.
Should I replace my metal fillings with white or porcelain?
That is completely up to you. Our porcelain and white fillings are affordable enough to justify a change for cosmetic reasons – many patients do not like the look of metal in their mouths. Dr. Berger may recommend replacement if your metal fillings have become worn or weakened over time, or in amalgam fillings that have noticeable cracking.
What happens if I ignore a cavity and wait to get it filled?
Cavities harm enamel by creating an acid which gradually breaks down the tooth. Cavities in some instances may remain contained or fail to spread, but in most cases, they continue to do damage to surrounding enamel until there is nothing left. If too much enamel is worn away by bacteria, the underlying tooth root could become exposed and vulnerable to decay. At this stage an involved root canal or tooth extraction may be needed. Not only could you lose your teeth, but gum tissue and jaw bones may suffer damage as well.
The bottom line is: Don't procrastinate! Schedule your white filling treatment as soon as possible.
