A diagnosis of TMJ is a good thing because once the source of your TMJ symptoms is identified, we can begin treating it. TMJ is a very treatable condition that can disappear entirely with proper attention. When dealing with a TMJ condition, you'll want to make sure your doctor has the experience and equipment to make a solid diagnosis.

Dr. Berger and his team will evaluate the severity of your TMJ and present a list of possible treatment options. The principles of TMJ bite therapy will be used to create your unique treatment. The general protocol is to proceed with the most conservative choice that will yield the best results.

Depending on the nature of your misalignment problem, treatments may include noninvasive options like:

• Basic measures like warm compresses, jaw resting, avoidance of some foods, gum, and candy
• Medication - anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, etc.
• Physical therapy – ultrasound treatment, jaw muscle stretching and relaxation exercises
• Stress reduction – biofeedback therapy, counseling, and more
• Orthotics - mouth splint or bite plate to reduce grinding and clenching. Custom-fitted appliances range from simple to complex and often alleviate pain immediately. Orthotics can be created for upper and/or lower arches to relieve stress on the jaw joint and allow it to strengthen.

For patients with more persistent problems that do not respond to basic measures, the following may be recommended:

• Arthrocentesis – a procedure which uses an injection of cleansing solution to flush the jaw joint

• Arthroscopic surgery, arthroplasty and joint replacement - surgeries to tighten, restructure or replace the TMJ are usually only recommended in severe cases.
