TMJ Symptoms
Serving Sonora, near Stockton & Modesto
TMJ can only be diagnosed after a proper evaluation of your jaw joint. However, a number of symptoms are common indications of TMJ problems. As you review the following TMJ symptoms, keep in mind that the jaw joint is a ball-and-socket joint, and that any misalignment can affect a large area.
The most common symptoms experienced by TMJ patients are:
- Headache – occurs when the ball of the jaw joint puts pressure on the surrounding muscles causing severe headaches and migraines
- Jaw sounds (clicking and popping) – caused by lack of cartilage at the rear of the jaw joint, or dislocation of the joint
- Earache/tinnitus (ringing in the ears) – occurs when pressure is put on the ear canal by the jaw joint
- Grinding sound – occurs as a result of an uneven bone surface at the rear of the jaw joint
- Grinding/enamel damage – attempts by the body to correct jaw misalignment, leads to grinding motion
- Head/neck pain – caused by pinched nerves that are impacted by the ball of the jaw joint
The symptoms of TMJ essentially occur when too much stress is placed on the jaw joint. The jaw joint is overextended and fatigued. Treatment of TMJ using medication, oral appliances, or surgery are designed to correct the bite by bringing it back to a well-balanced position, thereby relieving the joint of unnecessary stress and allowing it to function in a healthy and efficient manner.
Most patients are able to find relief with minor solutions. Removable appliances are very effective, eliminating pain by gently edging the lower jaw forward into a more strategic location. Custom-made appliances work by ensuring the ball-and-socket is operating harmoniously.
Other TMJ symptoms include:
- Difficulty opening or closing the mouth
- “Traveling” ear, head and jaw pain
- Neck soreness
- Difficulty chewing tough foods
- Uncomfortable bite (where the teeth meet)
- Shoulder or back pain
- Dizziness
- Vision problems
- Locking of the jaws
- Pain intensification during chewing, speaking or yawning
- Unexplained tooth loss
- Light sensitivity
