What type of laser is used for gum recontouring?
Dr. Berger uses the Diode laser, an effective, safe, and efficient laser for recontouring gum tissue. The Diode laser is also extremely precise, allowing for the smallest amount of gum tissue removal and accurate recontouring. The results obtained with the Diode laser are far more symmetrical and precise than could previously be accomplished by hand.

What causes gummy smiles?
Some patients may have excess gum tissue due to medical conditions or certain medications.  Some may have had development problems that caused the gums to remain in place instead of recede as they should.  For others, the problem may actually lie in the teeth – oddly shaped or short teeth due to genetics, decay, injury or grinding can give an appearance of excess gum tissue even when gum lines are normal.  Excessive supporting bone may also be to blame. 

What other treatments can improve the look of gums?
When the teeth are the source of a gummy appearance, Dr. Berger may recommend lengthening the tooth or teeth with the placement of a dental crown (called crown lengthening), tooth bonding, or porcelain veneers.

Is laser recontouring a safe procedure?
Laser soft tissue recontouring is a very safe gum-reduction treatment. Before laser technology was introduced to dentistry, this was a surgical procedure that carried with it infection and other risks.
