Porcelain Inlays / Onlays
Serving Sonora, near Stockton & Modesto
A porcelain inlay / onlay is used to restore strength to a tooth when decay or injury has weakened it. Less invasive than a crown, the inlay / onlay is a good choice for medium to large size cavities that have not affected the tooth root. The purpose of both inlays and onlays is to restore strength to a tooth so you are able to use it normally, and to protect it from additional damage or decay.
An inlay / onlay is similar to a filling in that it fills in the hole left after decayed or damaged enamel is removed. However, the inlay / onlay creation process is more like that of a crown. After a precise impression of the damaged tooth is taken, your porcelain restoration is custom-shaped in our dental laboratory for a high quality result. Dr. Berger uses porcelain for inlays / onlays because he believes it offers the best structural support and the most natural appearance.
- Inlays are placed within the cusp tips of teeth.
- Onlays are used for larger areas of damage and are placed over the tooth cusps
Between appointments, you will wear a temporary inlay / onlay. During the next visit, Dr. Berger will remove the temporary filling, bond the permanent restoration into place, and check to make sure you are left with a comfortable and natural-looking fit.
For some patients, Dr. Berger may recommend your inlay / onlay be made using the same-day CEREC equipment.
